나는 전설이다 - 전설이 된 밥 말리(Bob Marley)

윌 스미스(Willard Christopher Smith Jr.)가 주연한 영화 나는 전설이다(I Am Legend)라는 영화를 보신 분의 평가가 다양하더군요. 저는 높은 점수를 줍니다. 원작 소설은 오래 전에 읽었는데 솔직히 지루하기도 하고 결말이 허무해서, 왠만한 소설은 2~5번 정도 재탕해서 읽는 편인 저도 다시는 손이 안가더군요. 원작을 읽지 않은 분이라면 볼 만하다고 생각됩니다. 전문가나 준전문가들께서 평해주신 글을 읽어보면 윌스미스의 연기는 좋게 평가하면서도 이전에 영화화되었던 다른 작품과 비교를 하면서 아쉬움을 기록하셨더군요.

그러나 제 개인적인 생각으로는 이건 원작과는 다른 별개의 작품으로 봐야할 듯 합니다. 영화 올드보이와 같다고 해야하나?  원작 만화에서는 복수의 원인이 약했지만(솔직하게 말도 안되는 이유) 영화에서는 이유뿐 아니라 그 복수방법도 이유를 근거로 같은 방식의 복수를 하죠. 만화보다 영화가 뛰어나다고 생각되더군요.  나는 전설이다도1954년 리차드 매터슨의 원작이 발간될 당시에는 놀랄만한 이야기 였지만 지금 입장에서는 주인공이 죽는다는 결말을 제외하면 식상함을 넘어 지루함을 준다고 보입니다. 그러나 영화에서는 뻔히 예측되는 결말에도 불구하고 시작부터 끝날때까지 계속되는 긴장감들과 혼자 남은 자의 심리를 너무나 잘 연기하고 있는 윌스미스에 의해 지루함을 느낄 틈이 없더군요. 거기다가 알고 있는 원작의 결말과는 다른 예상치 못하는 식의 결말이 오히려 마음에 들더군요. 소설에서 이렇게 고쳤으면 하던부분을 보는듯 해서 시원하기까지 했습니다.

영화도 좋지만 삽입된 밥 말리(Bob Marley)의 음악도 너무나 좋았습니다. 밥말리의 전설을 노래하는 네빌의 마음이 느껴지는듯 합니다. 이 영화에 밥 말리의 음악을 넣자는 아이디어는 윌 스미스가 냈다고 합니다. 영화에 출연하기로 결심한 후, 어느날 우연히 집에 있는 밥 말리의 앨범 표지를 보고 깜짝 놀랐다고 합니다. 그것은 Legend라는 제목의 앨범이었죠. 노래를 다 들어보고는 감탄을 하며 인종차별을 혐오하는 밥말리의 음악 세계가 영화와 딱 맞다는 생각을 했다고 합니다.

인간과 가장 친한 동물이 개라는 말이 실감하더군요. 네빌이 주인공이라면 샘은 훌륭한 조연이었습니다. 마네킹과 대화하거나, 샘을 사람처럼 여기며 대화하는 장면에서 혼자 남은 최후의 인간이 느끼는 고독을 잘 보여줍니다. 네빌이 극중의 딸 말리가 준 친구같은 개 샘에게  "괜찮아, 걱정할거 없어" 라고 위로합니다. 참고로 극중의 딸 말리는 윌스미스의 친딸입니다. 그리고 극중이름을 말리라고 지은것도 밥 말리를 좋아하기 때문인듯 합니다.

나중에 찾아온 조(샐리 리차드슨)와 대화하는 장면에서 밥 말리에 대해  이야기를 합니다. 공연을 앞두고 저격을 받은 밥 말리가 무대에 섰다고 하면서  밥말리가 "악은 쉬지않고 활동하는데 내가 쉬어서야 되겠는가"라는 말을 했다고 합니다.

윌스미스는 이 시대의 전설에 대해 “같은 시대에는 전설이 있을 수 없고, 지나야만 전설이 된다" 고 했습니다. 밥말리나 간디, 마틴 루터 킹처럼 죽은 뒤에야 그 음악과 정신이 많은 사람들의 가슴 속에 살아남는다는 건 정말 어려운 일이라면서 우리 시대의 살아있는 전설로 넬슨 만델라를 꼽았다는군요.

맨위에 보이는 그림의 동전은 밥말리 탄생 50주년을 기념해 발행된 주화입니다. 밥말리는 자메이카의 전설이며, 레게의 전설입니다. 밥말리(Bob Marley)는 1945에 자메이카에서 태어나 1981년 36세의 젊은 나이에 암으로 사망하였습니다. 그는 킹스턴에서도 가장 빈민가인 트렌치타운에서 성장했으며 학교를 다닌 후 용접기술을 배웠습니다. 빈민가의 생활이라는게 사회적 차별과 권리박탈, 경제적 곤궁으로 얼마나 궁핍한지는 설명안해도 짐작하실 것입니다. 아마 이때부터 분노와 그로인한 반발심같은 것이 있었을 것입니다. 밥 말리는 자신의 생각을 표현하는 수단으로 자메이카의 토속음악인 레게를 선택했습니다.

1960년대 초부터 그는 피터 토시(Peter Tosh), 버니 리빙스턴(Bunny Livingston: Bunny Wailer) 등의 친구와 함께 웨일러스(Wailers)라는 이름으로 음악을 연주하면서 작곡을 하기 시작했습니다. 이들은 자메이카의 가수 겸 작곡가인 조 히그스(Joe Higgs)의 가르침을 받았으며, 그의 프로듀서였던 콕선 도드(Coxsone Dodd)와 함께 만든 싱글 시머 다운 Simmer Down이 수록된 앨범은 1964년 자메이카의 인기순위에서 1위를 차지했습니다. 이후 1969∼1971년에는 프로듀서 리 페니(Lee Perry)와 함께 자메이카에서 성공을 거듭했으며, 1973년 아일랜드 레코즈(Island Records)와 계약하여 캐치 어 파이어 Catch a Fire를 내면서 유럽, 아프리카, 카리브해 지역에서 큰 인기를 얻었습니다. 1974년에는 에릭 클랩턴(Eric Clapton)이 밥말리의 노래 I Shot the Sheriff를 리메이크해서 불렀고, 순회공연을 하면서 영국과 미국에서 레게 음악에 대한 관심이 높아지기 시작했습니다.

밥말리는 경쾌한 비트의 레게에  공격적인 가사를 붙인 노래를 많이 불렀습니다. 음악을 통한 선동을 했다고 해야할까요? 말리의 음악은 혁명적인 가치를 지니고 있습니다. 밥말리에 의해 레게가 세계로 전파되면서 그의 가치관은 음악을 통해 알려집니다. 그에 따라 밥말리는 위험한 아티스트로 알려지게 되었고 말리 자신도 내 자체가 반역음악 이라고 스스로 시인을 했습니다. 그의 백밴드인 Wailers라는 이름이 가지는 의미도 선동과 비판, 고발을 외쳐된다는 뜻이 아닐까요?

젊은 나이에 암으로 사망하기까지 밥말리는 솔, 두왑, 스카(초기의 레게)등 미국과 자메이카의 대중 음악 양식을 혼합시킨 독특한 음악을 만들어 냈으며, 평화, 사랑, 평등, 희망, 그리고 흑인의 힘과 통일을 노래함으로써 자메이카 흑인의 아프리카 복귀를 주장하던 라스타파리아니즘(Rastafarianism)에 대한 국제적인 관심을 환기시켰습니다. . 1994년 로큰롤 명예의 전당(Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) 공연자(performers) 부문에 올랐고, 전설이 되었습니다.
