1972부터 1974년까지 큰 인기를 끌었던 Boney(보니)라는 호주(Australia) TV 시리즈가 있었습니다. 독일에서 TV 시리즈의 음악을 담당하고 있던 프랭크 패리언(Frank Farian)은 뛰어난 프로듀싱 감각으로 직접 곡을 쓰고 스튜디오 뮤지션들을 동원해서 호주 TV 시리즈의 주인공인 보니라는 이름을 따와서 보니 엠(Boney M)이라는 가상의 그룹 이름으로 자신의 음악들을 발표했습니다.
프랭크 패리언(Frank Farian)은 프로듀서로 성공하기 전까지는, 요리사로 일하기도 했고, 음악감상실을 찾아다니며 레코드를 파는 보따리 장수로 생계를 유지하기도 했습니다. 그가 유럽인들의 주목을 끌기 시작한 것은 70년대 초반부터 로큰롤 히트곡들을 독특하게 리메이크하면서 부터입니다. 그의 음악은 당시 독일(서독)내에서 상당한 인기를 모았다고 합니다.
그런데 문제는 무명의 싱어들을 기용해서 만든 가상의 그룹인 보니엠이 너무나 유명해졌다는 것입니다. 실험적인 삽입곡 Baby, Do You Wanna Bump가 폭발적인 반응과 함께 단 시간에 인기가 치솟았고, 보니엠(Boney M)의 음악은 유럽 전역을 흥분시키고 있는데 정작 보니엠이라는 그룹은 존재하지도 않는 상태였습니다.

위의 싱글(노래)은 따지자면 보니엠의 앨범이 아니라고 봐야겠죠. 보니엠의 데뷔 앨범은 1976년에 나온 Daddy Cool 싱글이며 그 후에 정규앨범인 TAKE THE HEAT OFF ME이 나왔습니다.
보니엠의 음악은 자메이카의 토속 음악인 레게 뮤직을 근간으로 당시 대세였던 디스코 댄스 리듬을 접목시킨 신선한 장르로 유럽과 아시아 전역에 폭발적인 인기를 누리기 시작합니다. 그러나 초기에는 미국에서 큰 인기를 끌지 못하였습니다.TAKE THE HEAT OFF ME 앨범은 Baby Do You Wanna Bump를 비롯하여 지금 들어도 신나는 Sunny 나 Daddy Cool 같은 많은 곡이 수록되어 있으며, 그중에서도 Daddy Cool은 얼마전 우리나라의 디제이 DOC가 샘플링해서 런 투 유라는 곡을 발표해 큰 인기를 끌기도 했습니다.
